The legal frame

Private Membership Association — the covenant, in plain language.

A Private Membership Association (PMA) is a long-established legal structure that lets a group of people voluntarily associate under a shared covenant. For Unleash, it's what makes the Statement of Faith legally meaningful and gives community standards their teeth.

What a PMA is

Not new. Not exotic. Just legally distinct.

A Private Membership Association is a legal structure recognized under U.S. law that lets a group of people voluntarily associate under a shared covenant, with their own governance and standards of conduct, distinct from a general commercial transaction. Churches, professional societies, medical practices, faith-based clubs, and mutual-benefit associations have used this structure for centuries.

The key idea: PMA members transact and associate with each other privately, under mutually agreed terms. That's different from a public marketplace transaction between strangers governed only by consumer law.

Nothing about a PMA lets Unleash sidestep the law. It's not a workaround. It's simply the correct legal framing for a community of people who have voluntarily entered into a shared covenant and want their community's rules to actually mean something.

Why we use one

Three things the PMA makes possible.

Statement of Faith with teeth

Members voluntarily affirm a shared Statement of Faith. The PMA is what makes that affirmation a meaningful commitment rather than a marketing statement.

Community standards that hold

Certified Vendors are held to a defined ethical standard by the Christian Faith & Deeds Council. The PMA gives that accountability an actual legal footing.

Private, mission-aligned commerce

Members transact with each other under Christian-community terms, distinct from public consumer transactions. Mission alignment stays real, not aspirational.

How to join

Three levels of participation.

1

Viewer — no membership required.

Browse the Worship Song Library. Read anything published on unleashthechurch.org. Visit Commons and see what's listed. No account needed, no covenant to sign.

2

Member — for participating in the community.

Full PMA membership. Requires affirming the Statement of Faith and agreeing to the community standards. Members can leave reviews on Commons, contribute to the Worship Song Library, and participate in the clubs (Writing Club at SHS today; Production Club and Artist Club as they launch).

3

Certified Vendor — for selling services.

Additional certification through the independent Christian Faith & Deeds Council. Members who want to list services on Commons apply for Certified Vendor status. Certification affirms Christian faith and defined ethical conduct — not self-attestation, but independent review, with an appeal path through the Institute for Christian Conciliation.

Common questions

What people usually want to know.

Does the PMA cost anything?

Member and Viewer status are free. Certified Vendor certification carries a small annual fee to sustain the Council's review work.

Can non-Christians participate?

Yes, as Viewers. You can browse everything without affirming any statement of faith. Member and Certified Vendor tiers require the shared covenant.

Is my church PMA-registered?

The Unleash PMA is Unleash's own membership structure — separate from your church's own membership. Joining Unleash doesn't involve your church.

What happens if someone stops meeting the standard?

The Christian Faith & Deeds Council reviews the situation. Certification can be suspended or revoked. Appeals go through the Institute for Christian Conciliation.

Membership signup opens with Commons.

The PMA membership flow lives inside Commons — you sign up for an account there and affirm the covenant during onboarding. Certified Vendor applications go through the same interface once membership is confirmed.
